Stories from Australia’s Gold Coast

Joseph Nowak

The Gold Coast has several leading amateur theatre companies including: Gold Coast Little Theatre in Southport, Javeenbah Theatre in Nerang, Spotlight Theatre in Benowa and Tugun Theatre Company, Tugun.

These companies have been providing top notch entertainment for patrons for many years.

The majority of actors, singers, dancers, directors and backstage and lighting crews do not get paid in an amateur theatre production. They do it because of a sheer love of performing.

When a performer decides to audition for a production and is successful, he or she must make a commitment to that production for 8-12 weeks of rehearsals (usually 2-3 nights per week) and 3-4 weeks of performances (normally 3-4 nights per week).

It’s quite a big sacrifice a performer has to make when they commit to a production, but also a very rewarding experience.
